If you’re wondering how an island can sparkle, you clearly haven’t been to Santorini. This glorious Greek island is a castaway gem in the Southern Aegean Sea. From the rippling sea that twinkles under cloudless blue skies to the gleaming whitewashed houses that bask under the scorching summer sun, Santorini certainly sparkles – and that’s even before you’ve popped open the bubbly.
This rocky island really is a sight to behold. Formed thousands of years ago by violent volcanic eruptions, Santorini is a crescent-shaped island cradling a central lagoon. Steep craggy cliffs and narrow paths give way to a smattering of tiny bays, while sugar-cube villages tumble down the hillsides, clinging to the rocks and adding splashes of pastel colours across the black volcanic backdrop. Spend time on this captivating island and you’ll feel like you’re teetering on the edge of the world.
It’s an absolute must-see place, and while getaways here don’t always come cheap, there are low-cost Santorini holidays to be found. One of the best ways to grab a bargain is to book well in advance, for holidays departing a year or so in advance. That way you’ll take advantage of travel agents’ deals and in most cases, you’ll also have the chance to pay off your trip in instalments. Furthermore, booking ahead gives you more time to save your spending money and plan what you want to do.
There are plenty of special holiday destinations out there. Take a Tunisia holiday for instance – here you can combine lazy days on the beach with designer shopping trips, a spot of haggling in the souk and even excursions across the desert. But Santorini is a truly unique destination, and while it may not come cheap, it’s an experience that you’ll treasure long after you return home – and it’s worth every penny.
