The Mexican people, descendants of the Mayans and the Aztecs, are known for their friendliness and, being a country that is brimming with strange but interesting cultures, it is no wonder that Mexico is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Apart from the many attractions and activities the country has to offer to tourists from all over the world, is it the fascinating cultures of the people that draw thousands of people, year after year. For instance:

Food plays a big role in the many religious festivals held throughout the year in Mexico. One such festival called Candlemas or Dia de la Candelaria, as it is known locally, is celebrated every year on February 2nd. Friends and family members gather after the church service, to enjoy the tamales that are specially prepared on this day, in order to celebrate Mary’s purification, as well as the blessing of Jesus.
Another important day in Mexico is the Day of the Dead, which takes place every November 2nd. On this day, everyone eats pan de muerto, or bread of the dead, a long, thin, sweet loaf, which is made with plenty of eggs, and lots of sugar.

Although there are no rules and regulations as to who is allowed to marry whom in Mexico, only monogamous marriages are permitted. Traditionally, marriages consist of a civil registration first, followed by a church wedding, after which the couple then throw a lavish celebration for friends and family members. Divorce, although a reasonably simple legal procedure, is usually frowned upon socially.

The legend of the god Quetzalcotl is the one that is of most significance to the people of Mexico. According to the legend, while Quetzalcotl is looking for bones with which to create the human race, he arrives at the region of the dead, Mictlan, and is intercepted by the evil god, Mictlantecutli, who does all he can, to stop Quetzalcotl from collecting the bones. However, Quetzalcotl, assisted by his sacred worms and bees, foils Mictlantecutli’s evil attempts, and manages to collect all the bones he needs, and succeeds in bringing the human race into the world.
Mexico – Interesting People, Interesting Cultures – Oddities
Apart from the above few interesting cultures of Mexico, there are a few more, which many will find interesting too, but at the same time, rather strange as well.
- It is illegal to display a nude painting in Aguascalientes.
- Cyclists must keep both feet on the pedals at all times, to avoid losing control of their bicycles.
- It is against the law in Mexico City, to greet anyone with the term: “Have a nice day.”
- It is against the law to tell jokes aimed at one-legged men.
- Priests are not allowed to wear their religious clothing while out in public.
- In Guadalajara, it is against the law to shout out distasteful words in any public area.
These, and the countless other strange but interesting cultures, together with the abundance of indoor and outdoor attractions, is what makes Mexico such a popular holiday destination with thousands of people from all corners of the globe.
