Greece is where most people picture when summer holidays are mentioned Ė beautiful beaches, white churches with blue domes …. idyllic to say the least. One island that has become hugely popular for summer jaunts is Kos.
I think the great thing about Kos is that thereís an area of the island for everyone, whether you want raucous nightlife, chilled-out evenings or romantic strolls on the beach.
The advantage to this is also the influx of cheap summer holidays, especially those last minute deals, so Kos is a destination accessible to all. Be sure to save as much money as possible, to put to good use in resort, by pre-booking airport extras, not only saving money, a good excuse in itself, but also adding a world of convenience and lack of stress to travelling. Check out car parking gatwick or Stansted airport parking for flights out of London and see just how much you can save Ė guilt-free, duty free shopping here we come!
When you get to Kos, youíll find that negotiating your way around the island to different resorts is easy, thanks to the good public transport links. If you want to head even further afield, and leave Greece altogether, then why not head over to Bodrum in Turkey for the day on the ferry? Iíd highly recommend this, itís a great chance to see a taste of two countries in one holiday.
The main tourist parts of Kos are Kos Town and Kardamena. Kos Town is the place to head for those wanting a touch of culture, with a beautiful 14th century castle to explore. The harbour is also a picturesque place to visit, and itís here youíll catch the ferry over to Bodrum. There are also lots of interesting, quaint shops in Kos Town, so put those saved pennies to good use here – remember to check out Birmingham airport parkingif youíre flying from the midlands, as those extra funds will come in very handy indeed!
All this travelling around is all very well and good, however part of any summer holiday is spent on the beach. I love beach days, and most beaches have all the facilities youíll need for a dayís frolicking in the sea. There are many water-sports available, and Iíd recommend you give them a go, because if thereís one way to cool down in the summer sun, itís splashing around in the cool water! If you can, give parasailing a try, itís my favourite water-sport of the lot.
Night-life on the island is colourful and varied. Start your evening with a delicious meal, from a huge range available. Try some traditional Greek food, with mezes to start and maybe a plate of moussaka to continue. Itís delicious and actually quite healthy too! Donít worry if youíre a little picky though, there are many international menus for everyone.
When your dinner has digested, itís time for something a little more lively, with cocktails and dancing maybe? Kardamena is where you need to be heading for full-on lively night-life, with many bars and clubs begging for you to visit.
Kos has everything a summer holiday should have, and youíll leave with great memories to last a lifetime. For a late summer deal, or maybe next year, check out Kos.
